Security updates fix known weaknesses in operating systems, browsers, applications, phones, computers, routers, printers, and smart devices. Delaying updates gives attackers more time to use flaws that vendors have already corrected.
A simple monthly routine
- Install operating-system updates. Check Windows Update, macOS Software Update, Android System Update, and iPhone/iPad Software Update.
- Update browsers and applications. Pay special attention to browsers, email, PDF readers, office software, remote-access tools, and password managers.
- Check network equipment. Review router, Wi-Fi access point, printer, camera, and smart-device firmware.
- Restart devices. Some updates do not finish until restart, and a restart can clear temporary performance problems.
- Confirm backups. An update is not a backup. Verify that important files exist in at least one separate protected location.
Use automatic updates thoughtfully
Automatic security updates are appropriate for most personal devices. For business systems, test important line-of-business applications and maintain a rollback or recovery plan, but do not leave critical patches waiting indefinitely.
When a device cannot update
- Confirm storage space, power, internet access, date and time, and restart status.
- Check whether the operating system or hardware has reached end of support.
- Remove obsolete software that blocks a supported upgrade.
- Back up data before major operating-system changes.
- Replace unsupported devices that handle sensitive information or remain exposed to the internet.
Performance and security overlapUpdates may improve stability and compatibility, but a slow device can also be caused by failing storage, insufficient memory, malware, overheating, or too many startup programs. Updating is a strong first step, not the only diagnosis.
